Ayurvedic Medicine and treatment processes have always enjoyed a special status and respect in Kerala as compared to other states in India. Most people might even be under the impression that Ayurveda took its roots in Kerala. This is not true. Nor is it true that the basic Ayurvedic scriptures were first written by scholars in Kerala. While it remains a fact that the climatic conditions that prevail in Kerala favour the treatments and also paves way for surplus availability of rare Ayurvedic herbs in the state’s lush forests, the reason for the popularity of Ayurvedic hospitals and treatments in Kerala goes beyond these factors.
Acceptance: The primary reason for Ayurveda’s widespread popularity across the length and breadth of the state is the level of acceptance and trust placed by the native people on this ancient medical practice. People in Kerala have from the very beginning accepted the effectiveness of Ayurvedic treatments in curing diseases and ailments and have considered it just as effective as Allopathic medicines. This level of acceptance is absent in other parts of India, either due to lack of awareness or trust. When the level of trust and acceptance is high, it becomes the best environment to practice the medicine system.
Organization: From the time it took formal structure, Ayurveda has been classified into 8 branches which have been called collectively Ashtavaidya. These branches or specializations were then passed on to 18 families in South India who took them up and preserved the traditions, scriptures, practices and everything that came with it. While only 8 families remain from the original 18, the system of passing and practising Ayurvedic medicine has been conducted in a very organized manner in Kerala. The ones who ventured outside the state have not been able to maintain this system or organization and thus were never able to gather trust, followers or believers in order to pass on the ancient knowledge.
Tourism: It would not be correct to say that tourism has not played any part in promoting Ayurveda in Kerala. The revenue from tourists seeking Ayurvedic treatments in Kerala has greatly helped fund more authentic Ayurvedic hospitals and centres across the state. Unlike Allopathy, Ayurvedic doctors and practitioners don’t draw huge salaries, and hence financial viability would have been a cause of concern for the sustenance of this Ancient medical system. But thanks to tourism, now Ayurvedic hospitals and ayurvedic treatment centres in Kerala have progressed to become one of the most authentic voices in Ayurveda today. However, one needs to realize that, unlike the images portrayed by tourism companies; Ayurveda is not just about massages or therapies. It is a way of living that involves following a nutritious and healthy diet plan and body exercise routines.
So the next time you think of Ayurveda or exploring an Ayurvedic treatment for any of your physical or mental conditions, do not hesitate to head over to any one of the certified Ayurvedic Hospitals or Ayurvedic treatment centres in Kerala.
